Calendula Ointment – Find out the Benefits and an Interesting Alternative

Many people absolutely love the benefits of calendula ointment, and I have to say for very good reasons. Unfortunately, however, many commercially produced calendula skin care products also use undesirable artificial ingredients that can cause damage to the skin.

There's a great way that you can get all the advantages of calendula without exposing yourself to harmful synthetics... Just use an all natural calendula soap!

On this page, I'm going to discuss the many hidden benefits of calendula, and let you know the best way to get your hands on all natural calendula soap.

Calendula, also called pot marigold, has a healing oil within its blossoms. This all natural substance has many advantages for those who decide to use it:

  • Calendula ointment and calendula soap is soothing and anti-inflammatory
  • It's great for evening out the tone of red blotchy skin
  • It's wonderful for healing minor burns
  • It helps heal chronic dry skin
  • It helps heal eczema.

As you can see, the benefits of calendula are overwhelming making it one of my personal favorite natural skin care ingredients. So how do I recommend using calendula oil?

Like I said above, you can apply it as an ointment or use a calendula soap, either way gaining similar advantages. I personally, however, like to use it in an all natural homemade soap as you don't have to worry about the presence of any synthetic ingredients often found in commercial products that may cancel out the benefits of this wonderful nutrient.

If you do decide to buy calendula ointment I recommend going to www.herbspro.com; but before making your purchase why not try to make calendula soap on your own using my easy to follow soap making tutorial? In reality, you are not on your own at all, but you have me by your side every step of the way!

Calendula Soap Making

Creating calendula soap that has all the benefits of calendula ointment is simple, but there are a couple of notes I must go over about using this ingredient for soap making:

Calendula soap making involves the use of calendula oil...

What exactly is calendula oil? Calendula oil is actually calendula infused olive oil. The infusion process is simple. You merely add calendula petals to olive oil and apply heat for an extended period of time. This is usually best done in a crock pot. Keep in mind that some soap makers use other oils to infuse calendula. Olive oil is not the only type that will work. just remember that the soap making values (like SAP value, Iodine value etc.) will be the same as olive oil or whichever oil you decide to infuse with calendula.

There are 2 main ways that you can incorporate calendula oil into your soap recipe:

  1. You can ad 1 tablespoon of calendula oil for every 3 pounds of soap at the end of the soap making process when your batch reaches a light trace. If you don't know how to make all natural homemade soap, explore this site for the details!
  2. Unlike some soap making nutrients, calendula oil will go through saponification when mixed with lye because of the olive oil. Therefore, you do have the 2nd option of using calendula oil as a regular soap making oil by incorporating it at the beginning of the soap making process along with the rest of the oils. You would do this instead of adding it at the end after saponification has already taken place.

Since calendula oil is somewhat expensive, especially if you buy it pre-made, you will be able to cut costs by adding it at the end of the soap making process as explained above. You'll get the same amount of skin care benefits with a fraction of the cost. If you do decide to saponify calendula oil, allowing it to only take up about 10% of the total oils used will give you good results.

If you are buying this ingredient pre-made, only buy a pure form that's not extracted with any type of solvent. If the label says "made with propylene glycol" it's a good indicator that a solvent was used in the extracting process.

Keep in mind that when purchasing calendula oil, it will occasionally be labeled calendula extract. This is usually the same thing. Just make sure that it is an oil soluble extract.

Now have fun making calendula soap and exploring the many pages within this soap making resource.
